When teeth experience minor damage or decay, dental fillings are used to restore their function and appearance. Fillings are commonly used to repair the damage caused by cavities, including unwanted holes or voids in a person’s teeth. Dental fillings work by sealing off spaces that can be used by food particles and bacteria to access the inner portions of a tooth. At Grandridge Dental, we are proud to offer tooth-colored fillings which provide a more natural appearance than traditional metal fillings.
Also known as composite fillings, tooth-colored fillings consist of a combination of quartz and glass fillers housed inside of a resin medium. This type of filling is durable and able to fully withstand the pressures associated with everyday chewing.
The process of receiving a composite filling starts by removing any decayed portions of the tooth, as well as any existing filling material. Once the tooth has been cleaned, a special filling material that matches the tooth’s natural color is applied. This material is hardened using a dental curing light to give it strength and stability. Finally, the filling material is shaped and polished, so the tooth has a completely natural appearance. Once completed, the patient will be immediately able to resume their normal eating, brushing and flossing habits.
