Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are designed to restore the appearance and function of damaged or decayed teeth when a full dental crown would be considered excessive.
Inlays and onlays are unique in that they are custom-fitted using impressions of the patient’s teeth. Patients who receive an inlay or onlay will be required to make two visits to our clinic. The first visit involves having impressions of their teeth taken, and the second visit consists of permanently applying the dental inlay or onlay.
A dental inlay consists of applying filling material to the interior of a tooth in order to cover some or all of the area within the cusps, or points, of the tooth. Inlays are usually performed when a tooth is damaged in such a way that it cannot be repaired with a regular filling, but not so damaged that it requires a full dental crown. Because inlays are custom-fit, they typically leave teeth stronger and more durable than teeth that have been treated with classic fillings.
Onlays are slightly more extensive than inlays, in that the filling material covers at least one of the cusps or points of the tooth. In some cases, an onlay might cover the entire chewing surface of the tooth. Onlays are a great treatment option when a tooth requires restoration, but a full dental crown is unnecessary.
